Rugby Photography Settings: Camera Settings for Every Phase

Rugby packs more physical contact per minute than almost any other field sport. Scrums, rucks, tackles, and mauls happen in tight clusters of bodies, while breakaway runs cover the length of the pitch at sprint speed. Getting settings and positioning right for both extremes is what separates a compelling rugby gallery from a blurry mess.

The Two Speeds of Rugby

Rugby photography demands settings for two almost opposite situations within the same match. Contact phases (scrums, rucks, mauls, tackles) involve players moving relatively slowly but colliding with tremendous force at close quarters. Open play (breaks, sprints to the try line, kicks) involves players moving at genuine sprint speed across open grass.

Contact Phases

Players move slowly but limbs move fast on impact. A tackle involves a body travelling at moderate speed but arms and legs snapping into position at high speed on contact. 1/1250s is usually sufficient to freeze the moment of collision cleanly.

Open Field Running

A winger at full sprint covers ground at 8 to 9 metres per second. This demands the same shutter speeds as athletics sprinting: 1/2000s or faster to freeze stride and limb position without blur.

Bright daylight allows fast shutter speeds without pushing ISO. Stop down slightly from wide open for better subject separation at contact-phase distances.

The Peak Moments Worth Positioning For

The Tackle

The decisive tackle moment is the point of first contact, when the tackler's shoulder meets the ball carrier and both bodies are compressed by the force of the collision. This is more compelling than the moment either before (approach) or after (both players falling). It requires anticipating the tackle line rather than reacting to it. Watch the ball carrier's angle and the defender's positioning to predict where contact will occur, and pre-focus on that zone.

The Offload

A player being tackled while simultaneously passing the ball, the offload, is one of rugby's most dramatic and skillful moments. It happens in a split second during the tackle and requires you to already be tracking the ball carrier closely, ready to catch the pass release before the tackle completes.

The Scrum

Scrums are photographically interesting at the moment of engagement (the initial collision of the two packs) and during the push (visible strain, compressed bodies, mud and grass flying). Position from the side rather than directly behind either team, at a slight angle that shows the geometry of the contest without either pack's backs blocking the view.

The Lineout Catch

A jumper at the peak of a lineout lift, ball secured overhead, is a strong vertical image against the sky. Position side-on to the lineout, low if possible, so the jumper's full extension reads clearly against open sky rather than a cluttered background of other players.

The Try

The dive to score, ball extended toward the try line, body horizontal in the air, is the signature rugby image. Position at the try line itself if access allows, low to the ground, anticipating which side of the pitch the attack is developing on. A winger running in unopposed produces a cleaner shot than a contested dive over a pile of defenders, though the contested version often tells a more dramatic story.

Rugby has a rhythm that becomes readable with experience. A team recycling ball through several phases near the opposition line signals an impending try attempt. A team kicking for territory signals the ball is about to travel to open space. Players chasing a loose ball or being driven back in a tackle can end up metres beyond the touchline at speed. This is one of the more physically demanding sports to photograph from the sideline.

Autofocus Strategy

Rugby's mixed pace requires flexible AF handling. Continuous AF with subject tracking works well for open field running where the player is isolated and moving in a relatively predictable line. In contact situations with multiple bodies clustered together, wide zone tracking can grab the wrong player. A medium zone or single point on the ball carrier is more reliable during tackles, rucks, and scrums.

Rugby Union vs Rugby League: Any Settings Difference

The two codes are photographically very similar. Rugby league has fewer set-piece contact phases (no scrums in the traditional contested sense, no lineouts) and a faster, more continuous style of play with the six-tackle rule creating a repeating rhythm of tackle, play the ball, and pass. Photographers covering league benefit from anticipating the play-the-ball moment, which recurs predictably and offers a clean, repeatable shot of the acting half-back distributing the ball.

Union's set pieces (scrums and lineouts) give photographers more predictable, slower-paced moments to work with, which is useful for building a varied gallery beyond pure open-play action shots.
